Discussion about Neil Ardley / John Leach - Mediterranean Intrigue / Martenot

Neil Ardley... on KPM? Yessir! Side A on KPM 1084 is also side A on Neil Ardley / Ian Carr / Don Rendell - Greek Variations & Other Aegean Exercises, albeit in slightly edited form and in a somewhat re-arranged order. The music is obviously sublime as it's taken from one of the finest UK jazz LPs ever recorded. Shame about the editing, though, which seems kind of pointless. The edited tracks are "Journey By Land" and "Resting Place", which lose about 70 seconds each. If you're on a budget and desperately need half of "Greek Variations" on vinyl, this might be a (dumb) solution.Side B is all John Leach, the composer and cimbalom shredder who hammered away on the soundtrack to "The Ipcress File". The main focus here however is on the spooky sounds of the Ondes Martenot, although the cimbalom do turn up as accompaniment on a track or two. Some of the tracks sound like a mix of the score from "Blood on Satan's Claw", Raymond Scott and the 70s hit "Popcorn" (although nothing here is as good or fleshed out as that soundtrack, Mr Scott or even "Popcorn"). Closing the album are a few sound effect type recordings featuring the Martenot. These are great if you enjoy annoying your cat.So, get the LP for side A, but side B is worth a spin if you're interested in (sort of) old-school electronic music or want to annoy your cat.
