Discussion about John Beltran - Part 2

Four beautiful selections from John Beltran's superb Earth & Nightfall album, released on the iconic R&S label. This was one of the first pieces of vinyl I purchased which could be classified as 'electronic music'. I have the clear violet version, although I didn't realise it at the time until I happened to hold it up to the light one day; it looks like a regular piece of black vinyl unless you hold it up to a relatively bright light source. The stand out track on this 12' has to be Nitric. The combination of deep resonant bass (which seems to dive and submerge itself throughout the track), skittish Hi-Hats, a fairly dry sounding 909 snare (that is admittedly a guess), and female vocalisations which sound almost choral in their reverence, come together to form a timeless track which possesses a genuine level of depth and sophistication, and one which would subsequently prove very influential on my fledgling ears! Needless to say, the remaining three tracks are equally as magnificent. Sub-Surface and Vienna are beatless ambient tracks which provide a nice contrast against the two beat-driven tracks on this release. Vienna introduces some perky classical strings, and sub surface lazily sways to and fro behind some classical guitar stylings. Synaptic Transmission features more of those beautifully rounded bass tones found on Nitric, accompanied by well-placed piano stabs and a busy synth motif which doesn't detract from the chilled vibes of the song and the release as a whole. I am extremely grateful to Styrax for this release. It established my love of 'deep' electronic music, and encouraged me to further explore the many different sub-genres of Techno, House etc. which exist. The free Styrax Leaves sticker that came with the release was a nice little touch as well!
