Discussion about Various - Maestro
Nenayally
This documentary is really not a coverage of the whole New York disco and house scene. It basically gives you an insight on three clubs that was the foundation of the uprising of Dance music and DJ culture. Mainly Paradise Garage and Larry Levan, Nicky Siano's The Gallery and David Mancuso's The Loft. with a brief touch into Francis Grasso and The Sanctuary. The main focus is at Levan and The Garage that the director always return to trougout the film. If you consider it a documentation of those three or four clubs, the movie is great. If you think you will get the whole spectrum of the New York scene, the movie sucks.. Plain and simple.First time appearance of some unseen footage of Paradise Garage is quite a must with the highlight being a 4-5 minute segment of Larry Levan behind the decks on the Garage's last closing weekend. But as well we can see some few clips of The Gallery and The Loft (99 Prince Street).Again, i don't think this documentary was a insight of the whole club scene but really just at these three clubs. I think that is what Ramos intention were in the end. People seemed to dismiss this as a poor documentary of New York / New Jersey / Chicago house.I myself liked it enough. Lots of information to get from this if you are interested in the history of the culture. But the second disc is the real treat for me. Mancuso on Audiophile, more Garage footage and a extended interview of Frankie Knuckles. Also a interview of Robert Williams about Ron Hardy´s time at the Music Box. Disc two gives you a little more insight on Chicago. But if you really want more of the Chicago stuff, you should get "Pump Up The Volume" documentary. All in all, this documentary is a must if you have a highly interest in the Paradise Garage and early New York clubbing history.
